Preparing to take the Tour ...
Everything you need to know, but might forget to ask

By Lynn Brazen
For those taking the tour for the first time, and for those who need a reminder, here is everything you need to know to make the Tour of Homes experience easy, safe, comfortable and fun.

Big Canoe Day, Friday April 30
The tradition continues: Big Canoe residents and their guests are encouraged to see the four tour homes on, Friday, April 30, Big Canoe Day. On this day only, attendees will visit the homes in their own cars. Car pooling is encouraged. Parking will be available at the new parking lot below the Chapel and at the Swim Club/Fitness Center.

On Saturday, Tour participants will park at the Wildcat Pavilion parking lot inside the North Gate. Starting at 8:15 a.m. and continuing at 15-minute intervals, shuttle buses will transport visitors from the Wildcat Pavilion parking lot to the lower parking lot next to the Broyles Center, where the Ticket Tent is located.

From here visitors can shop with Marketplace vendors in the parking area and then enter the lower level of the Broyles Center to find additional Marketplace vendors, the Book Nook, Collectors’ Corner, Bear Paw Bakery, and the Crazy Bear Café before catching a tour bus in front of the Chapel. The last tour bus will leave at 2:15 p.m. The last bus returning visitors to the Wildcat parking lot will leave after the final tour bus returns.

Where to purchase your tickets
Tickets are $20 per person, and everyone attending the Tour is required to have a ticket, including children. Timed tickets can be purchased prior to the Tour at the Chapel office, at Stand Around on Sunday mornings at the Big Canoe Chapel, and online at the Tour website  with PayPal (through Tuesday, April 27).

Available tickets can also be purchased with payment by cash or check on the day of the Tour at the Ticket Tent, located in the lower parking lot next to the Broyles Center. The Ticket Tent is open Friday, April 30, from 8:30 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 1, from 8:30 a.m. until 2:15 p.m.  Everyone must check in at the Ticket Tent to receive a map, itinerary, and Tour Program. On Friday, tickets will be checked at the entrance to each home. On Saturday, tickets will be checked when boarding the Tour buses.

Saturday Tour Buses
Each air-conditioned bus holds 24 passengers. A Tour Ambassador will be on each bus to welcome passengers to the Big Canoe Tour of Homes, give a brief narrative of interesting facts about Big Canoe, help the bus driver find the turns, and answer questions about points of interest as the bus travels its scenic route. Participants should follow instructions from the Ambassadors and House Captains regarding loading and unloading of the buses.

House Captains and Hostesses
Each home will have a House Captain and Hostesses located throughout the home. They will provide directions within the home, answer questions about the home, and provide assistance with any problems.

Comfort and Safety
Because the tour involves a lot of walking, tour participants should wear flat, comfortable shoes with good support. High heels and shoes without good support are discouraged. Booties will be provided at each home, and all tour guests are required to wear them over their shoes in the Tour homes.

Children should be supervised by an adult at all times. Baby strollers, walkers and wheelchairs are not allowed on the Tour for safety reasons.

Restrooms are located at the Wildcat pavilion and in the Broyles Center. Modern port-a-lets will be located at the first and third home on the Tour.
  • No smoking is allowed in the Tour homes or on the Tour buses
  • No food or drink is allowed in the Tour homes
  • Photography is not allowed in the Tour homes
